CHIN SURGERY IN BATON ROUGE, LA

Chin Surgery

Chin surgery – also referred to as mentoplasty or genioplasty – is a surgical procedure that corrects the shape, size, or position of the chin to create a balanced facial proportion. Misshapen chin appearance due to congenital problems, aging, or injury can impact negatively on one’s self-esteem and sense confidence. Plastic surgeons address this issue by moving the chin forward or backward, adding an implant, or removing part of the chin bone to improve the harmony of facial features. Most patients who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their chin are thrilled by the outcome of this procedure.

LA plastic surgeon Dr. Ruston Sanchez has helped numerous men and women from Baton Rouge and surrounding Louisiana areas of Lafayette, Hammond, and New Orleans achieve their goals and improve their quality of life with chin surgery. Dr. Ruston works individually with each one of his patients to find a treatment plan that will produce the desired outcome.

Who is an ideal candidate for chin surgery?

Chin surgery is a cosmetic procedure that aims to improve facial harmony and appearance. You may be an ideal candidate for this treatment if you have any of the following characteristics:

  • Projecting chin
  • Receding chin
  • Asymmetrical chin
  • Pushed forward chin
  • Pushback chin
  • Poor occlusion (contact between upper and lower teeth)

During your initial chin surgery consultation with Dr. Ruston, the surgeon will listen to your concerns, ask questions, and let you know whether this treatment is for you. Dr. Ruston Sanchez is a committed professional who works diligently to create an individualized treatment plan to meet the needs and expectations of each patient. Dr. Ruston may ask you to stop smoking, avoid some medications, and set aside time for recovery before undergoing this procedure.

Surgical technique

Chin surgery is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. Typically, Dr. Ruston Sanchez will make an incision between the lower lip and jaw bone to create a pocket and then insert an implant to give a more projected chin. The surgeon may also remove part of the bone to decrease an overly projecting chin. If the patient is concerned about occlusion of the chin, then the surgeon will modify the upper or lower jaw to alleviate this concern. Once the treatment is complete, Dr. Ruston will stitch the incisions and bandage the treatment area. Mentoplasty may take between 1 and 3 hours to complete.

Types of Chin Surgery

Depending on the patient’s desired aesthetic outcome, Dr. Ruston has the following techniques to choose from:

Sliding genioplasty

Also known as osseous genioplasty. During this procedure, Dr. Ruston will make an incision behind the lower lip or under the chin and separate the soft tissue from the chin bone. The surgeon will use a special tool to cut a vertical line in the chin and a horizontal line along the chin bone to ensure the chin remains straight during and after the procedure. For a pushed forward chin, the surgeon will cut out a wedge of bone from the chin bone. He will then slide the bone backward and attach screws and metal plates to keep it in place. For a pushed back chin, the surgeon will reattach the bone creating a step in the bone. For a shorter chin, the surgeon will reattach the bone with a gap between the chin and the jaw making it longer. To correct an overly projecting chin, the surgeon will remove the wedge of bone and reattach the chin to the rest of the jaw. Finally, the surgeon will stitch the incision.

Chin implant surgery

In this type of procedure, synthetic implants are used to enlarge, push forward, or reshape the chin. Dr. Ruston Sanchez will make an incision inside the mouth or under the chin. He will then create a pocket through which he will insert the preferred size and shape of the silicone implant. This implant is sculpted to suit the patient’s desired outcome and the treatment area is stitched up and bandaged.

Chin shaving

During this procedure, Dr. Ruston will make an incision under the chin or inside the mouth. He will then use a special burr to shave the excess bone off to give the desired outcome.

Moreover, other nonsurgical procedures may be administered. Dr. Ruston may inject dermal fillers or some of the patient’s own fat through liposuction into the soft tissue of the chin to achieve subtle enhancements.

Recovery after chin surgery

Chin surgery is an outpatient procedure that typically takes an average of 2 hours to complete after which Dr. Ruston will closely monitor the patient before releasing them to go home. Following genioplasty surgery, patients can expect to experience swelling, bruising, and numbness which dissipates after a few days. The surgeon may prescribe pain medication to help alleviate severe discomfort. He will recommend that you consume a liquid-only diet over the first three days in recovery. A post-operative appointment will be scheduled so that Dr. Ruston can assess your recovery progress. Majority of Dr. Ruston’s chin surgery patients can get back to their normal daily routines after 2-3 weeks. You will be asked to desist from strenuous exercise and activities until you get a green light from the surgeon. In case of any questions or concerns during, feel free to get in touch with the surgeon’s team.
